Check engine light
I'm going to assume your check engine light is on. This could be a big problem, or a small problem. The best way to tell is to take it to a shop and let them hook it up to a computer. Some auto parts stores like AutoZone, will hook it up and check it for free. Just go to the counter, tell them your check engine warning light is on, and ask them if they can hook it up to their computer. It only takes a few minutes and will tell you the problem almost every time. It's a lot cheaper than having a mechanic do it.

We have a 2008 Kia
I am currently having the same problem with my 2007 Kia Rio SX. I have to leave my car on at the pump to even be able to drive it away with minimal problems; it still sputters and will rev the engine very high until I turn my car off and let it sit for about an hour.I took it to Advanced Auto the diagnostic machine gave the code P0496. This apparently has something to do with a Vapor Canister Purge Valve, which prevents vacuum from entering the fuel tank during normal purge operations. I know at Advanced they had one for $46, but I do not know how to replace one yet, or if I'll have to take it to a mechanic.
