Car cuts out won't start
but does it crank robustly
no car starts unless you can spin the crank shaft fast.

If it makes the sound during idle and you have manual transmission, check the clutch plates, pressure plate and related bearings. If it happens when the car is moving, check driveshafts, wheel bearing and brake pads.
Engine light stays on
check oil and coolant levels first . Have the fault codes read to find which sensor activated the light as it can be engine or transmission . When you have determined the fault and had it fixed then reset the light with a code reader.
Why doesn't it start?
If it won't start normally, but does with a jump start, it means your battery is failing, or the terminals are dirty. Not enough volts and amps, to turn the starter motor and supply the system

Remove the cap from the fluid reservoir - fill the reservoir to the full mark.
Start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel full lock left then full lock right. Repeat a few times. Then check the fluid level again.
Turning the steering wheel full lock should allow the fluid to get throughout the system. Any air in the system should vent to atmosphere from the reservoir.

Normal thermostat operating temperature is around 80 to 85 degrees so that temperature is a little high. Does she do a lot of short, slower city driving or faster motorway runs.
Have you had the thermostat checked? I'm not sure whether that year uses the traditional type or the newer version with the heat sensor built in. I think it's the newer one. Thermostats are usually the best thing to check first as when they get old they start to fail and they are usually fairly cheap to replace.
If it was the water pump it would be noisy, leaking or both. So it would be worth getting a good mechanic to look at it.
