Either the drive has failed, the sensor and the transmission wires, or the guage is dead. First move is to check whether the guage has power and a signeal.

First check the radiator for coolant. It should be a close to the top. A kinked or plugged reservoir line will keep the coolant from going back in the radiator(pressure pushes it out of the raditor, vacumm pulls it in). Follow the top radiator hose to the engine, this is where the thermotsat is.

I would suggest a compression test on each cylinder and a pcv valve check. I would suspect a problem in the rebuild job!!
