Chrysler 2.7l engine are designed that way because the water pump is internal and powered by the timing chain. The hole is to let you know if the pump has failed. I had the same engine different car same problem and my pump was bad

I assume this is a floor shift,remove shifter knob, pry the trim around the shifter up to remove to get to the 2 screws there, in the storage compartment there may be 4 screws, pull Ebrake up as far as you can then rear of console upward over ebrake handle then back,remember you have to reverse what you just did to put it back together. If your after the shift cable try to pop it off the trans first to see if it can be moved out of park at the trans if so more likely is the cable if not you may have internal trans problem.

something is up with your cooling system

Sounds like you might have hooked the stereo up to a wire for the pedal.Have you tried disconnecting the wiring for the stereo ?

As long as the trunk is open, It won't work. The top has it's own computer. Have the codes read. Takes a scanner. These have like 20 sensors and switches for the top and trunk. You can try to close the latch on the trunk with a screwdriver to get it to work. Another thing is there is a cover that pulls out . This has to be pulled out and latched in place. This will keep it from working also.

right in front of the engine compartment fuse box. i believe on these models its integrated with the ecm. its all one unit. there is also a solenoid control unit on the transmission

Sounds like maybe a stuck thermostat. or a blocked heater core. Just cause the system was flushed dosent mean the heater core was cleaned out.

Is the check engine light on? I suspect it is.

There are several things that go wrong with these that are fairly simple to fix and cheaper than the solenoid.

To replace the solenoid pack (by the way I have never had this fix a transmission problem) you are going to remove just about everything on the drivers front of the engine compartment. The air filter housing, computers, battery, fuse boxes, etc. Then you will be ably to see the solenoid pack located on the front of the transmission. You will then need to remove the cooler lines and the input speed sensor from the transmission. The three bolts for the solenoid pack can be removed with a 10mm socket. There could be Low hydraulic fluid level in pump reservoir. That should be located around your spare tire.

If the valve is stuck in the closed position, Yes it can cause excess pressure through the engine. Is the engine doing anything else different? The valves are usually quite cheap to buy and fairly easy to replace so it could be worth replacing it anyway. Do you have any warning lights on the dashboard? A quick test is to remove the PCV valve from the engine and listen to it as you shake it. A working valve usually has a Rattle sound. No rattle suggests a stuck valve. Some valves can be cleaned but this is usually a short term fix or to get the vehicle home. A stuck valve can cause a 'whistling' noise from the engine and it can also cause the engine oil to become sludge. If you replace the valve It could be a good idea to do a full oil AND filter change as well.

This almost seems like the vent on the gas tank is not allowing air in the tank as the fuel level drops. When the suction in the tank gets too high, no fuel flows.

As long as the engine is from the same generation of Sebring the body type should have nothing to do with the engine that is in it. 1998 makes yours a Generation One model. 2000/2001 was about the year the second generation, 'Face lift', version was released so make sure it is the correct engine. The newer generations were upgraded to the 2.7 litre, 3.0 litre and the 3.5 litre V6 engines so if the new one is a 2.5 it should fit.
