Inside the wiper motor, there is a circular contact that must have a solution of continuity. Clean this space, it may have some coal that make false contact.

Does your car have a "torque converter solenoid?" I had a car that would sometimes shut down when shifted into drive, the torque converter solenoid had gone bad.

Check fuses to make sure the resettable fuse has not failed. It is one of the small metal box like items in the fuse block. Also check the wiring to make sure it is not damaged, and if the lights come on but do not flip into position, check to make the motor has not failed- either worn brushes, or corroded bearings. Worst case is to manually rotate them open by the knob at the bottom of the motor. This can five you an idea of bearing condition as well. And as always, check the ground wires to make sure they did not break off.,

Because you probably broke it one time by turning the key to hard, and now need to replace something to get it working again.
