Try changing the fuel filter - it may be plugged. You mentioned the injector pump was changed...are you referring to the fuel pump? Also, make sure the fuel lines on the fuel pump are correctly installed - also, make sure that the fuel filter (if an inline) is installed in the correct direction (arrow pointing forward if inline); if it's a screw on filter (like that of an oil filter), than try replacing it.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

80% of the diesel problem is cause by fuel delivery and fuel return line.
10% of the diesel problem is cause by air pocket in fuel line or between injector pump and injectors.

Follow the check list to troubleshoot the problem.

==
Check for after market in-line pre-filter between fuel tank (or firewall) to the injector pump.
clean or replace it

==
Fill new filter with fresh diesel fuel

==
Check primer pump for air leak. A leaky pump will cause air to enter the fuel system.

If the primer pump is old then you should replace it.
==
Pump primer for 2-3 minutes to ensure there is no air pocket in fuel system
==
Check for blockage on fuel line
==
Check for return line blockage
==
Do a diesel purge
use short hoses and fresh diesel in a 2 liters soda bottle for to rule out old fuel,tank vacuum and line/filter blockage.
==
==
If the problem still re-surface then crack the injector line one at a time to let the air pocket out while cranking the engine.

BE AWARE OF HIGH PRESSURE FUEL.
Cover the injector with heavy cloth and use strong protection gloves.
==
Check for fuel return on the last injector.

Are the injectors balanced?

Check the factory specification on the injector pump timing.

Start the engine in neutral (if it's an automatic transmission to rule out neutral safety switch problem.

Check for 12V at each glow plug while the glowing to rule out glow relay problem.

Measure the resistance on each glow plugs.

If this is an EFI engine, you may want to inspect the idle air control valve. IT may be bad or just got stuck or need cleaning. You may also want to try to clean the intake manifold or the throttle body a good cleaning. There are solutions that can be used to spray over this areas. If this does not help, you may want to check the timing of the car.

That doesnt sound good. Check the engine oil level and top up as necessary. If the noise is still there, then you should take it to a mechanic to check. It could mean that you need to either replace the engine or overhaul it. Hope that helps

On most cars this happens due to lack of air in the fuel ratio. The car is flooding. As little use as I have for most dealership mechanics, I'd strongly recommend taking it back where you got it and making them fix it. Make sure there's no mouse nests or anything in your breather/air cleaner assembly. (you'd be suprised at how many "mouse house's" I find in those things. If not, make 'em fix it.

1977 vw rabbit will not start and run if cold,

Ther are a few items that could be causing your problem. first there is a temp sensor that turns on a cold start valve to give it a shot of fuel to help start when cold. second of corse would be the cold start valve is bad, and not spraying like it should. And then you also have an item called an auxillary air valve that lets in more air durring start up that could be bad. and ect ect ect. The best thing to do would be to get a book called Bosh Fuel Injection & Engine Managment written by Charles Probst and published by Robert Bently. i got mine at Books a Million, but am sure you could order one on Ammazon. You have what is called a continuios fuel injection system CSI for short, and can be a bit of a bear to work on without any books. Once you read and understand what you have , the better of you will be. On the bright note, this is one of the most reliable type of injection systems on the market, and yours being an early year without any type of computer, is very easy to work on.

Will not start without spraying starter fluid for a second.

I would start by changing the fuel filter. The next area would be the O-rings if so equipped. If it starts better after a short use then you are getting air in the fuel lines overnight. Diesels are tempermental. The cranking speed of the starter is important and easily checked externally. If you have a mechanical fuel pump you are relying on cranking speed to prime the fuel system. The timer or timing wiring could prevent the glowplugs from heating up. Diesels rely on glowplugs to start, then compression to run. Its a lot to look at but I suggested the cheapest fixes first.

Runs but wont idle. smells to rich. other than that it runs fine

This sound like a vacuum leak... Look carefully for loose/cracked hoses and connections from the fuel distributor/air box to the throttle body and around the idle enrichment bypass hoses... and also the intake gasket itself. The reason it smells rich is that the injectors are firing more to compensate for the lean running condition. It you run it this way too long it will overheat and warp the head or **** a valve... Hope this helps...;-)
