Greg, the spring in latch release is weak or broken probably or it is still seized and lubricant still has to be worked into it. You can probably get a replacement fairly cheap at auto recyclers. I have toyota matrix 2009 basic and when I shift from drive to park mode the front wheel drive axle does not lock in with transmission gear in turn running away vehicle on uphill park if parking brake was not set firmly.Please help. Replacing the steering part may have nothing to do with the lighting fault but may be worth checking with the garage and telling them it was all fine before they worked on it. Lie if you need to, they won't be able to disprove it.......oops! did I say that out loud.

Twist out and disconnect wires. Replace, twist in.

Pull the steering wheel harder one direction then the other while trying to turn the key. if the power steering was under pressure when shut off, it could need more than a "wiggle" to release.

The only way to fix it is by replacing the control head. You can try pricing one at the parts house. Or even try you local salvage yards. Dealership my be very pricey
