I have a 94 polaris 400l it runs but acts like it is cutting out if i push the reverse over ride it sounds better but still is is not correct.i have tested the over ride switch and it is working.does the speed limiter switch or shifter switch ever go bad what should i look for to be the problem

I have a polaris 500 ranger 6x6, it starts alright but when you take off it backfires

The speed limiter switch can go bad. The little piece of metal that deactivate the switch can break. To quickly check it, remove the the top of the THROTTLE CONTROL. locate the switch on the back of the throtle handel, rev it up and and push on the switch. see if that solves the problem.

It sounds like you need to adjust the shift lever or move it in an out of gear while holding the starter switch on. this will tell you it's the lever not the switch.

Have a 2000 polaris scrambler 500 and only backfires and pops in reverse. drive has full powrer and starts great
your reverse over ride not working , u need to open switch box see if you have power to the switch when bike is running with a test light then with brake on and in reverse check the output wire to see if you have power out when depressed be sure you have the wheels up in the air when you do this for safety sake

Polaris troubleshooting
It is possible. I have had CDI's only act up when the motor has run for over 30 min and only when I am on the throttle hard. Then acts normal when cool again. They can do odd things. You have to check everything else out to eliminate them.

Your jetting and adjustment is not right for that level . The Dealers should know that and adjust it for your level . It can also be your heat sensor what are not working correct anymore.

The over RIDE button is not used for shifting.
it is used to over RIDE the REV LIMETER while in reverse ( for applications such as plowing)
shifting into 4wd while moving is safe on some vehicles, but can cause catastrophic damage on others.
be ABSOLUTELY sure your vehicle is designed for SHIFT ON THE FLY .
If you aren sure, then come to a complete stop befor shifting.
