Re: I have a 2004 honda rancher 400cc and it won't idle.
It has a adjuster on the side of the carb,,i think it left side ,,black knob hangs off the carb but is a little lower down ,, turn if till it idles like you want,,,

Sounds like the throttle position sensor is going bad, take it to a professional and let them trouble shoot it.. it WILL be cheaper in the long run!!
Take fuel cap off to make sure it is getting air to fuel tank. Check fuel valve to make sure it is on. Drain carb with screw on bottom of carb to check for water. Pull spark plug to make sure it is firing.
you need to remove the bolts and then it should come off... you might have to GENTLY tap with a RUBBER hammer..the magnetic attraction between the rotor and stator may make it a little harder.. >> pull straight off<<<
Try cleaning the spark plug with fine grit sandpaper,make sure air filters is cleaned,then make sure carb is cleaned pilot or idle jet might be clogged. good luck
