Question about Yamaha 2004 Kodiak 400 Auto 4x4

1 Answer

2002 Yamaha Kodiak 400 will not hold low idle.

We have a 2002 Yamaha Kodiak 400 that will not hold low idle. The cam was recently replaced and the valves adjusted to spec. We also rebuilt the carb and have tried several different jets to see if that was the problem. Idles high with no problem but when we turn the idle screw it will get down to low idle and will not maintain and dies.

    Sounds like your air fuel mixture is out of spec. Did you adjust the screw near the intake side of carb on the bottom? Also check the boot for cracks easy way to check for an air leak is take a small propane torch and turn the gas to it on but don't light it of course. Pinpoint your way around the front of the carb and boot with the gas to the torch on while the engine is idling and it will be noticable as it will pick up ROMs. If not it's likely out of adjustment on the air fuel screw. It will be protruding about 5 mm from the front bottom side of the carburetor. Screw in all the way and then back out to 2.5 to 2.75 turns and try it again

    Also check the plug. It will tell you alot about how it's running and what condition it's fuel mixture is running. Too wet is too rich too black is lean, it's a matter of playing with the settings for A/F and idle speed until it's dialed in right

SOURCE: Cuts out after 10 minutes

Sounds like fuel tank vent problem , air has to get into tank
sometimes its vented by fuel cap but a lot of hedge trimmers use
a duck bill valve right thru tank or hooked to hose .
To test if this might be the problem loosen gas cap when it starts to die .
good luck

SOURCE: Yamaha TTR 250, Idling Problem

check the inlet manifold rubber has not seperated from the aluminium part of the manifold ,this is very common on the ttr 250 and will cause the exact problem you have,if it is seperated either replace it or repair it with some good quality rtv sealant avoid sillicone sealant as it is not petrol resistant and will turn to jelly.adam

SOURCE: Cleaning Carb Jets

not to a trained ear also go by rpm and spark plug color

NOTE: use copper wire to clean jets, sync is just thottles are same position as all carb's just leave them adjustments alone will be fine if are out use a 1/8 drill an place in between piston/butterfly to carb bore to sync/calibrate

better use a manometer for adjusting screws

depends on condition of org parts

worn = richer running

new = lean an clean

also if changed the exhaust system need to
re-calibrate carbs for max performance

2000 Yamaha Kodiak 400, was running fine and in an instant it went to half throttle, starts fine idles fine. been this way for 2 years, I run it almost every day, air filter is clean, new plug

Sounds like a frailed throttle cable, or that it might be rusted or mucked up with something. Would undo it on carb and see if it has full throttle movement on the cable. If you have not done this yourself before best to have it done professionally or do some read up good luck hope this helps

Kodiak 400 metal in oil

Hey.. sounds like you are on the right track..

If you are going to do it... remove the engine..its going to have to be totally disassembled to make sure ALL the metal and rubber pieces are COMPLETELY removed. This will also provide you with the evidence for a parts list for replacements parts and pieces as you take it apart..slowly.. Clean parts make for a clean engine.. watch for small oil passages and any little nooks and crannies in the cases that will pack with ground up metal..COMPRESSED AIR and long wooden swabs work wonders.

ps.. replace the cam chain no matter what it looks like!!!!!

I've got a yamaha kodiak 400 and ca't get it to idle. Appears to be to rich. If I turn the fuel off it will idle ok. I,ve checked the float level hight and starter plunger but have run out of ideas.

change the needle valve and seat in the carb also check for debrise' in the fuel line, contaminents no matter how small can hold the needle valve open also check the clearance on the intake valve to insure proper adjustment
