I presume You mean a Polaris Explorer 400 ATV, rather than a Ford Explorer 4.0 litre? I did some edits to fill in the blanks, but Fixya have mixed up the image for Polaris Pool Cleaners :>)

Your oil pump is important, so you need to check inside or just replace it. The other place to watch for pieces of aluminium casting is around bearings and seals. If they fail, the damage can be great, but castings can be filled and machined.

Yes there is - and it gets stuck at times. It does on mine anyway. Work up in garage and see if problem goes away.

threaded into eng block. on front of eng low. careful removing can strip threads easily. warm eng helps w/removal good luck. go slow.

vaguely recall on my polaris explorer 300 4x4 it had rotating cams where the chains run. ie, loosen a lock bolt then rotate the cams to tighten the chains.

If you can identify what is rubbing on the cover, and then determine what needs to be done to prevent it from rubbing, you should be able to decide if you have the skills to perform the tasks needed.
That's what working on your own machines involves.
