You may need to do a carb clean and adjustment giving it a higher idle speed.

SOURCE: 1999 polaris sportsman 500, awd most of the tome does not work does not work. when it does it pulls very hard to the left almost un steerable

replace the 4x4 switch and the ucb joints

follow ur throttle cable down to cars there should be a plastic screw close to cable to adjust idea but with polaris that screw can be hard to find with all the plasticc they put in way but if u can see carbs easy enough u will see the idle screw

SOURCE: Our Polaris Sportsman 500 battery died. We tried to pull start it and it jerked and pulled out of my hands. Now we can't pull it at all. Seems stuck at a high compression. Any help?

maybe the battery is ok but the problem is a lock in the engine --hydraulic lock, crank seizure ,bent conrod
bent valve hitting on piston top

Normally, you would just drain the tank, remove the fitting and replace the gasket. I don't see a gasket though, unless it is just a standard O-ring. That is the way to do it though.

It is a known issue. You likely need a new switch, they burn the contacts with prolonged use.
