SOURCE: timing for a 96 mercury mystique 2.0 4cyl. L4

You are quite right, there are no timing marks on the camshaft pulleys. One of the marks on the crankshaft pulley, the one that is furthest counter-clockwise, lines up with a raised mark on the oil pan,at about 5 O-Clock as viewed from the front. The special tool to position the camshafts is a straight bar that aligns the slots on the rear of the camshafts. These are supposed to be aligned before the belt is removed. If the engine is turned without the belt installed, some of the valves can be damaged. Hope this helps.

To set the timing you should turn the No.1 piston to TDC, then turn the cam to where both valves on No.1 are close. The timing mark on the sproket should now be in line with the mark on the cilinder head. With No. 1 still on TDC fit the chain.
After fitting turn the engin a few times by hand to make sure there's not a valve pushing against a piston.

No start on bear tracker 250 just backfires

The timing is not adjustable. I would start with a clean air filter, clean carb, good spark plug, check and make sure that your cam timing matches your flywheel.

05 700 King quad with timing marks all lined up should all 4 valves open at almost the same time intake and exhaust open on exhaust stroke????

the exhaust and inlet valves will be moving if you rock the crank back and forward at TDC
this is called valve overlap and indicates that you are timing the valves on the exhaust stoke tdc and not the compression stroke tdc
turn the crank over till you get tdc again and see if the inlet and exhaust valves have clearance and the timing marks line up
timing is done only on no 1 piston TDC position compression stroke

How to ajust the timing chain on Yamaha big bear motor a tv

You will need to find the timing marks and have the firing specifications to line it up. Most timing marks have the Top Dead Center position marked with a large raised triangle mark. Take out the spark plugs and use a pencil with an eraser to determine (by feel) when the piston raises all the way up the cylinder... this is the TDC position. Line up the chain so that the TDC triangle corresponds to the actual piston travel inside the cylinder. Once you have them aligned, dial back the timing the few degrees specified in the manual. Put the plugs back in and fire it up. It it sounds "off" then repeat the process, something wasn't aligned correctly.

How to time an engine in a Bobcat 3400 xl (gas)

Take the spark plug(s) out and bring the top of a piston all the way up to Top Dead Center (TDC) using a pencil, eraser inwards to feel the piston top come up to its maximum travel. The timing chain needs to be aligned to the triangle mark indicator to match the piston position. Then adjust the timing advance according to the mfr's specs.
