Depending on the amount of metal in the oil would dictate the seriousness of the issue. A little is ok in most cases in the first few oil changes, but anything more than that and there is something wrong with the engine. In most cases this would mean a total rebuild.
Testimonial: "I figured so but this is the second oil change ive done the last one was over 2 years ago I didn't know how often it needed changing an there is quite a bit of metal flakes, whats the cause of the flakes what are they from???"
oh an thank you :)
2 years is definitely too long, which might account for the metal in the oil. It should be changed at least once a year depending on how much you use it and what for. If you just use it for utility at low revs, then once a year should be fine. If you are thrashing it on a regular basis, then more often, at least 2 times a year. Metal in the oil is caused by an unlubricated surface in the engine, and the two metal parts are wearing on each other. Theres no way to know which two metal parts, as there are so many that touch. Keep an eye on the engine after this oil change, if it starts running badly, get it in to a service center. Also, you may want to do another oil change this season to see how much metal is in the oil this time.
are you cleaning the oil filter too? not sure but its probably a metal mesh filter. I'd adjust the clutch too just in case its wear from that.
Wear from the clutch can't get into the engine oil.
probably the shavings are from the gear box as motor and gear box share oil. Sadly fixing gear box is costly
