Sounds like the bands are broken between the gears and it needs a rebuild. The bands or rings hold the gears in location so that when you shift the teeth will line up

This "broken" wire is a little more serious that just being broken, if one ever grounded to the frame or other wires it can cause serious issues with the CDI. Please take this to a professional. No, it wont be cheap.. sorry.
Replace the idle jet (don't clean) with a new one from a Yamaha OEM only $5.00 & make sure the idle mixture adjustment on the bottom of the carb. is set 3 1/2 turns out from seated in (a brass screw ---Don't over tighten & break off the needle tip). Also , be sure the choke is all the way off or it won't idle either.
