Solution#1 worked perfectly. It only took about 15 minutes all together.
the side panel removes easily. It just slides out of the other panel. Once you have removed the handle (Shifter) and the other two bracket bolts, just place it back into the shifter housing and move it around. I was amazed at how easy this was to repair. I also turned the ignition to the on position to see if it was changing gears and it was.

I tried this today and it worked. Pull the sideplate from the ATV so that you have access to the gear shifter assembly. Unbolt the gearshift assembly from the mounting bracket. There are two bolts at the rear near the two rods that exit the assembly and three on the bottom. When the bolts are out, remove the assembly from the mounting bracket. Hold it in your hand and move the shift lever through all of the positions. This won't actually shift the transmission, but it should free up the rods in the assembly. Remount the assembly with the five bolts and it should now be able to shift out of reverse.

Great fix!!! Saved me a trip to the shop. Thank you!!!

This worked great. The second instruction were a little clearer. Do not mess with the 4 bolts that hold the shifter to the gear box. Just the 2 bolts above the long rods and then the 3 bolts on the bottom of the housing. Take out and you will have to get the gears out of the locked position. Awesome!

The previous answers do get the transmission shifting again. However, it isn't a fix. It will happen again. Adjusting the shift rods helped slightly. Seems to be the shifter housing. The bores for the shafts that the shift rods bolt to are worn. Appears that is allowing too much space between them and the shifter gets jammed and can't get back in the notch. Haven't messed with it much. But none of the other parts show much wear. Not much of a way to repair the housing bores other than replace housing. Was a bad design. Should have had a Steele sleeve instead of just the soft aluminum. Was bound to wear out.

Thanks so much guys, worked PERFECTLY. Takes hardly any effort to fix when done as outlined above. I think the problem has something to do with the rod adjustments being off a little, and there are adjustment screws, but getting it unstuck was easy, thanks again!

1999 Polaris Sportsman 500. Why will it not turn off please?

Question edited for clarity and typos, and guessing it is a 'Polaris' and not a 'polar'.
Question moved to model category.

It is a known issue. You likely need a new switch, they burn the contacts with prolonged use.

2011 Polaris sportsman 500HO if towing in forward gear it locks up and won't let you go into reverse unless you shut the machine off and let it roll then it will unlock and switch gears wha

Sounds like a bad bearing or shaft in transmission.

Tranny works, shifter wont shift the gears. how to fix?

My 2005 Polaris ATP 500 requires I depress the right foot brake while shifting into reverse or down into low range. Perhaps some adjustment on the foot brake to make this work. Also check linkage to make sure it is not binding. Others say if the idle speed is too high, you may not be able to shift. Try shifting with the engine off to see if it goes into the gears, using the foot brake. If yes, try again while at low idle speed.

What is error code 51 and 58 how do I check gr4ound fault on my sportsman 500 or is it something more common like changing fuel filter

51 is a injector on #1 cylinder is stuck open.. will need to check wireing for damage first. 52 is cooling system fan issue.. fan is overload condition or maybe shorted to ground. Will likely have to chase wires to find issue.

Atv transmission

sounds like the connecting rod on the crankshaft.
i would inspect the primary clutch first before an engine teardown. Sometimes the engine shifts on the engine mounts and the clutch hits the cover, also check to make sure belt is not slapping around in cover.

2005 polaris sportsman 500 clicks fast only in gear and moving. What could it be?

Check your u joints or CV joints. Does the clicking speed up when the ATV speeds up? does it click worse when turning? Is there a stick or something jammed up in there somewhere?
