I have a 98 kawasaki prairie 400. starts right up and runs great but it will only get up to about 30 mph and then it just wants to sputter and backfire if you try to push it any faster than that. at that speed it still has like half throttle to go so i know it should go faster that plus it runs great other than that. im thinking that the high speed jet is plugged but i wanted to get an opinion from someone that knows more than i do before i go taking it apart

Hey Frank,
This could be the issue, has this atv been sitting up for a length of time? ... I would put a new spark plug in first,, you may have water in the carb.....you can drain the float bowl and put in the new plug,,, see if that cures it, other wise get the carb professionally cleaned and set. Try this and reply to me.

They normally will do that if you have lost the liner or pad, when you go to apply the brake becouse of no pad of drum liner brake pads travels to far before it reaches the rotor when it does get there, piston fully extended and it will lock the wheel

I have a 1998 Kawasaki Prairie 400 that the oil is grayish brown color, i changed oil and adjusted valves and again it is that color, otherwise it runs and drives good. Any ideas what could be wrong?
If it is water cooled it is probably a head gasket.
