check adjustment of shifter cable. the grating noise sounds like it is not completely into 1st gear.

How long does it run before you get bubbles? Sounds like the line is too close to something hot enough to boil the fuel, what mechanics call "vapor lock" Reroute the line or insulate it.

The sticky stuff is normal. On a lot of dirt bikes and 4 wheelers they have air filters that you are to wash either with a filter cleaner or gas and then you spray them down with a light oil and then wring them out until they have no extra oil in them and the oil helps filter the dirt out of the air heading into the engine. It does look in your picture like it is needing a cleaning.

Hey Destry, What makes you think its trying to run backwards...?? On a 4-stroke - this is odd!! .... I don't think a 4 stroke will run backwards!!.. (But, I have actually seen a two-cycle engine run backwards.... just retard the timing to zero). 1. Have you changed the spark plug? 2. Have you had the carb cleaned and set by a professional 3. Have you put in a new air filter. 4. Have you had the timing checked..(with a timing light) If the engine actually runs backwards it will cause engine damage.. all the moving parts are designed, clearances are set, and fuel/air intake and cam timing are all designed for the engine to turn in one direction,,, when it does turn backwards, the valve train clearances are taken up and sometimes the valves will hit the pistons...(on a V-8 the cam chain controls all this..its "slack" only works correctly in one direction).. Please do 1 through 4 and repost with the results, Thank yoe

This is the drive system for your quad... it take all the engine power and transfers it to the rear wheels,, its going to get hot,, If it starts smoking real bad... and smells worse.. drop by your local Suzuki dealer and talk to the service manager,, get his opinion.

Hey Steve, This isn't hard,,, please get a factory service manual.. spend a little $$ and save yourself MANY HEADACHES!! The manual will give you all the info yo need to do the job right.. you will probably need a press to remove and install the new bearings.

Although the symptoms you have described are those of a low battery, there are a few other things it could be. First, have the battery tested to see if that is the problem. Then, take apart and check the starter solenoid to see if the copper disc is burned and needs to be cleaned and lubricated. Also, then take apart and check the starter motor, to see if it needs to be cleaned and refurbished. God bless your efforts.

What atv are we talking about?

Could be flooding. That usually only occurs when you have excess fuel lighting off in the exhaust. I have seen it happen on cars when the timing is way off. I would pull the carb and check the float level and replace the float valve.

Hello Anom, I do need more information to truly help you. Has the ATV (??..engine size, carb, fuel inj., year,??..etc.).. been sitting for a while...the carb is probably in need of a simple cleaning (all internal passages), a new spark plug, clean/treat or replace the air filter will probably get it running!
