Replace spark plug (gap correctly),Drain all fuel, replace fuel filter, replenish tank with fresh fuel, do a thorough readjustment of the carb settings (last resort - remove and rebuild carb)

check and replace the Cdi Box, sounds like thats the main problem.

try cleaning with a electrical cleaner such as CRC sells at most auto stores. Spray the start switch and then the kill button if you have one. I just had the same problem and I had to disassemble the switch and spray it and it now works fine. You may only to to spray into the key hole area where you insert the key and then work the key back and forth to spread the cleaning soultion. the cleaner dries very quickly so spray insert key and turn several times. do not forget the kill switch clean that also...

If the shocks are worn out, get off the machine and lift up on the back rack. This takes up the slop between the shifter box and the transmission, and usually allows me to shift. I also had an issue with the thin steel plate behind the shifter box. Got a crack in the top , so it was flexing, creating more slop. Welded it shut, good as new.
