Polaris 2004 Sportsman 700 Twin - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

Go back to basics. What EXACTLY does it do when you try to start it? Just spins it is often No spark. 'Coughs' and tries to start is possibly a fuel supply issue. An engine needs 3 things to run. Air, Fuel, Spark. Did you check for spark on both cylinders? Have you checked the air filter is clean. You will be surprised at how much a dirty one can affect an engine. Have you checked for fuel supply at the cylinders. If you can get your head near the plug holes try this. Remove both spark plugs. Crank the engine for 2 seconds then remove the ignition key. Sniff the spark plug hole. Does it smell of fuel? Do the same for the other cylinder. Use the comment button below and I'll see if I can help you more.

I suspect one goes to the battery and the other is an aux power plug hookup. just guessing though.

check earth cable/s dont jump start with a running car engine,it will send too many volts. do you have spark?

clutch possible? transmission?

Check the thrust switch on the gearbox. Probably tore the splines on the aluminum thrust, so the shaft does not toggle speeds

If this happens when the unit is not in operation you probably have a bad float in your carburetor.

If motor has to constantly charge a battery while running, it could use a bit more fuel.

If the shocks are worn out, get off the machine and lift up on the back rack. This takes up the slop between the shifter box and the transmission, and usually allows me to shift. I also had an issue with the thin steel plate behind the shifter box. Got a crack in the top , so it was flexing, creating more slop. Welded it shut, good as new.
