NO, I do not think the actual barrels do at all, however often the inserts in the ends that hold in the lenses may, it depends on manufacturing process. regardless of how they are constructed and even if initially the barrels did detach, they most often however are sealed at manufacture to stop the ingress of moisture and keep alignment.

You do not need it for astronomical viewing--- no up or down in outer space.

You stick it into the focuser and tighten the small thumb screw. Then you put your eyepiece into the diagonal.
BUT! why would you do this? You only use this for terrestrial viewing not for night time Astronomy.
