The Motorola MC9090 can have different keypads attached. If you do change the keypad for any reason for example go from a 53 key to 43 key layout the terminals must be cold booted.To cold boot an MC9090 running Windows Mobile 5. Partially remove the battery, hold down the On/Off button, the trigger and reinsert the battery. When the orange light on the keyboard flashes release the on/off button and the trigger.

If the on/off button or trigger is held down longer than required this occasionally causes the terminal to get caught in a warm boot cycleIf the device is still not giving the correct key output it may have a faulty keypad.

Here is the cold boot instructions: To perform a cold boot 28, 38 and 48-key keypad configurations: 1. Simultaneously press and then release the 1, 9 and Power keys. Do not hold down any other keys or buttons. As the mobile computer initializes, the Symbol splash window appears for about a minute. 2. Calibrate the touch screen. To perform a cold boot on 20-key keypad configurations: 1. Simultaneously press and then release the 1 and 9, MENU and FUNC keys. Do not hold down any other keys or buttons. As the mobile computer initializes, the Symbol splash window, appears for about a minute. 2. Calibrate the touch screen. usually you need to configure the reader to tell it what kind of barcodes you want it to read and how to interpret & output the codes to your computer (whether you need prefix or suffixes to your codes( for automation)) the user manual for the reader has some bar codes to configure the settings for the scanner.

Try cleanboot if still doesn't work than check scan engine or flex cable for scan engine

IF USB: change cable or try with another PC

Mc9090 does not have a battery door?! You should try a reflash by SD card or Activesync, you will need access to support.symbol.com and possibly a service contract to access the firmware.

This is often caused by a corrupt driver, a small bit of software that tells you system how to deal with this printer. You didn't provide enough info on your system, software, OS etc. for a detailed answer. Try re-installing the driver.
