I am having a problem
Hello,
First, the service manual for your Coby DVD 218 is not available. The manufacturer of the player did not produce a service/repair manual for it.
The problem might be from the audio cord of the player. Use another audio wire and observe the sound. Also, there are more that one audio out put at the back of the player, you could test other audio outputs on the player.
I just hope it is not an audio output problem as you guessed, because fixing is not as easy as you think.
Good luck.
Scientific Atlanta 8300hdc remote program instructions
Don't know the exact code for your STB, but you can download the manual from http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=5027893&CTID=5000300&RLTID=1505&DETYP=RELATION ,
There you can find the list of all codes and also how to program them into the remote.
Trouble Loading & Not Registering To TV
I can't say 100% but it sounds similar to the problem I had with the same model . The sleep mode in the on/off switch had gone bad and a new switch fixed the problem. It was about $42 to rtepair at my local electronics repair shop. Hope this helps.
I had sound yesterday. left on all night - no sound today
Sounds like you did hit a button on your remote. More than likely it's an audio button on the remote. This button typically selects an audio track on the dvd itself. It's either this or somehow during setup you've selected (depending on the rest of your audio setup) either the bitstream or PCM output for sound. I would just try hitting the audio button until you get something, or go into your dvd setup and try changing from either bitstream or PCM to the other choice.

Not sure but try 438 or 445 as a code for your dvd, 445 most likely to work. (here is the link i got that from);
http://dogbytecomputer.com/codes.htm#DVD%20CODES
if this doesn't work then find a universal remote that you can get hold of easily near you and tell us the model number, we could probably tell you if it will be compatible with both machines and what the codes are.
Hope this helps :)
Sound, no picture
My husband pressed the P-Scan button on the remote control a couple of times or something, and lo and behold we got the video back. Please try that on your set as well.
Hope that helps.

On the remote, press the PAL/NSTC button to cycle through the output modes.
Choices are: NSTC, PAL, PAL-60 and AUTO.
Also make sure the correct TV type is selected in the System Setup menu.
