you will need air in a can and open the unit and remove the laser screen cover that supports the disc when in and blow out the dust in the laser do this a few times.

Either the disc or the player is not set to the correct "region code". Make sure you purchased the correct disc or player for your area. REGION CODE INFORMATION

First, the service manual for your Coby DVD 218 is not available. The manufacturer of the player did not produce a service/repair manual for it.

The problem might be from the audio cord of the player. Use another audio wire and observe the sound. Also, there are more that one audio out put at the back of the player, you could test other audio outputs on the player.

I just hope it is not an audio output problem as you guessed, because fixing is not as easy as you think.
