Wiring instruction for a White Rodgers 1F78 non-programable thermostat.

The White-Rogers 1F78 thermostat is a single stage 5/2 day programmable thermostat. Home Depot has the manuals for one model of this thermostat, 1F78-151, on the product page: https://www.homedepot.com/p/White-Rodgers-Single-Stage-Digital-5-2-Day-Programmable-Thermostat-1F78-151/202771121 . The wiring diagrams are in the Installation manual. The direct link to this manual is https://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfimages/f9/f955280d-67a2-4502-bb94-4975cd857c0b.pdf . Emerson Climate also has the wiring diagram here: http://www.emersonclimate.com/Documents/White-Rodgers/instruction_sheets/0037-6615.pdf . If you have a different White-Rodgers 1F78 thermostat, check for the manual at Emerson Climate by starting at http://climate.emerson.com/en-us/products/thermostats/thermostat-manuals . Click on the Enter Model Number button and start typing in the model in the search box. I found a number of models with 1F78 listed. After selecting a specific model, I found a link to the installation guide on the left side of the page, below the search box. (Note: the manual link was above the Suggested Replacement header for the models that I checked.) I hope this helps. Cindy Wells

I have a 1F81-51 White-Rodgers thermostat that

I had the exact same problem. Even pressing the Hold button does not really help, because once it resets - the Hold temperature also changes to the default.

I fixed this by replacing the 470 micro-Farad / 10v capacitor in the unit (it's the grey-colored capacitor). To access the back of the circuit board, you will need to break 2 plastic rivets holding the front of the unit to the base.

After replacing the capacitor I've not had any resets for the past 3 days (it used to reset itself every couple of hours).

Hope this helps.

Look for a tiny reset button in the area where you replaced the batteries. Very tiny button. Might need a pen point to press it.

My thermostat resets itself

BE absolutely sure the batteries are good. This is what usually causes this symptom, even it the 'battery indicator' isn't asking for a new battery. It happens a lot on systems that are being turned off with the breaker, safety or service switch; DON'T do that. When you put a set of brand new alkaline or lithium batteries, with the thermostat off the wall, leave NO batteries in it for about an hour. Be sure that the power is on 24/7 to the system. To stop the system from running, always use the "Heat--Off--Cool" switch.
