Whistler 1730 keeps blowing fuses.
Is the lighter socket fuse blowing or the fuse in the unit's power cord? Have you tried another power cord from a Friends radar detector? If it doesn't blow that power cord's fuse, then your power cord is bad. If it does blow the fuse in the other power cord, there could be something wrong with the unit. Contact Whistler at

Make sure that your ground and your 12 volt positive connections are secure. Did you wire the 12 volts to the fuse blox or to a wire under the dash? If you connected it to a wire under the dash, that wire may not have 12 volts or it may have 12 volts but not enough current to operate the detector.

Here are the steps from Whistler's FAQ page on their website:
When the display shows an "R1" type error on the display or the unit clicks (flashing either the Green power LED or the Yellow city LED), it means that the link between the inside and outside unit has failed. Generally this is caused by the receiver's (outside unit) cable becoming unplugged from behind the console (inside unit).
NOTE: The receiver cable is the straight one plugged into the "Radar 1" jack. The laser receiver (LRM-5) cable is angled and plugged into the "Laser" jack. This error will also occur if these two cables are reversed.
Follow the below steps to correct
R1/Clicking error message:
- Make sure the correct cable is connected to the correct jack and that it is fully engaged.
Make sure there is sufficient slack in the cables to prevent them from "walking out" of the jacks.
- Follow the Factory Reset procedure.
- If the above suggestions does not cure the problem, email our Customer Service dept for more information.

The unit does have an auto off function that turns it off and it also has a "teach mode" that goes through all the alerts. This is why i asked if the unit starts this after you press a button as these two features can be engaged if you hold a button too long.
