Can't access Hard Drive

what you family member did was create a partition for their harddrive and installed windows into the first half (thats why you can access it) the second half is locked by the administration right on the windows installed into the first portion. what you have to do is get partition recovery software available on the net and at software dealerships. that is the only way since you said that the first part on the partition had crashed. You might also try to repair the operating system in the first partition, that could give you access into the second partition

CAN'T GET TO DRIVE

internal sata.ok, here are the simple steps.1: it must have power to the power cable, try 2,2: put ear to HDD case is it spinning inside.no, hdd is bad.yes, good. no clicking or clanking allow, from arms distance.3: boot pC, does BIOS see the drive (data cable connected)yes/noif no, try all SATA ports. some are only for RAID, try them ALL!if BIOS cant see a real Sata drive, the drive is dead.let me explain BIOS, this only proves 2 things.1: power makes it to the HDD digital chips/2: and those chips can PNP report the drives spec and ID.it does not prove the drive works, only that it can talk. see?3: if you get it up in BIOS, (this is all par for the A+ classes today)3a; the boot wINDoZ , run disk manager. if DM sees the drive, then its there,. good.now set the drive letter, if missing.now program manager can see the drive.give the drive volume label, like: 2TB-monster...if you can not lable the drive, its VERY VERY sick.as always , first walk then run.

Western digital wd10ears not detected

If this is a second drive you will need to format it by going to Control Panel > System Tools > Computer Management. Select Storage > Disk Management. If you see your drive, format it and it should work.

If this is the drive you would like to use for your operating system you may have bad drivers. Western Digital has a how-to about this problem (url below). Essentially what you need to do is re-install the drivers for your controller card or motherboard. This requires finding the drivers from the manufacturer of that device.

WD1001fals as slave

SATA Hard Disk as a Slave b> An SATA hard drive is an internal hard drive that connects to your computer's motherboard. It is even possible to connect multiple drives to the same computer; however, only one drive can be the master hard drive; the other(s) must be slave drives. This is because the master drive has the operating system installed and must be used to boot up the system. When installing a new SATA hard drive onto your computer, you must set it as a slave. Power down your computer and disconnect the cables. Remove the Phillips screws from the exterior of the computer case and slide the case open to expose the interior of your computer. Identify the hard drive at the front of your computer, then slide the new SATA drive in underneath. Insert the smaller power cable into the power port on the side of the SATA hard drive. Follow the power cable running out of the current hard drive and insert it next to it on the motherboard. Pull out the ribbon cable, which has three different connection ports: one on each end of the cable and one in the middle. The connection port on the middle inserts into the slave drive and is slightly different than the other two ends (the pins built into the port are in different locations than the other ends). Insert the middle connection port into the ribbon port on the back end of the SATA hard drive. Plug one of the opposite ends of the cable (doesn't matter which one) into the SATA connection port on the motherboard (your current hard drive is inserted here). Once connected, this completes your slave drive connection. Second SATA 2 Hard Drive as a Slave b> Installing a second hard drive in your desktop PC or notebook is an option used to increase hard disk space without losing or transferring the data from your original hard drive. Using this method not only increases hard disk space, it also increases the virtual memory space for the Windows operating system, increasing operational efficiency. One of the ways in which a BIOS can recognize the second hard drive is to boot it as a slave drive, with the primary hard drive booted as a master drive. Turn the PC off and remove the desktop chassis. Refer to the pin connector diagram. This is displayed on the sticker, on top of the hard drive, for the position of the slave pin. Place the plastic connector on the slave pin as detailed on the diagram. Connect the hard drive to the power and IDE/SATA cable. Ensure the other ends are connected to the motherboard. Use the screws to mount the drive. Replace the desktop chassis. Turn on the PC. Enter the BIOS, by default this can be done by pressing F2. If this does not work consult your motherboard manual. In the BIOS, press right until the boot device tab is highlighted. Set the slave drive to boot following the primary drive. Read the bottom line and use the relevant key to save the settings. Restart the PC. Hope it helps. http://www.pcmech.com/article/installing-a-hard-drive-step-by-step/ Installing a hard drive.

Wd1600aajs slave settings

Hard Drive a Slave Drive Setting a hard drive to function as the secondary ("slave") drive allows you to use the drive solely as a storage unit. You can use the drive to back up valuable data on the primary drive without having to install or use an operating system on it. And all you need to get going is a screwdriver to pop the case open. Power down your computer. WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL. http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source. Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer. While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards Disconnect all of the cables and then put the computer on a stable work surface such as a desk or a chair. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the side paneling of the case. The screws are located at the back of the computer and along the edges--only remove the screws securing the case. Unhinge any case latches on the computer. Slide the side paneling of the case off the computer. Some case designs require you to remove the whole case, and some are broken down into removable panels. Remove enough of the case to have both sides of the computer exposed. Discharge any static that may have accumulated on your clothing before handling any internal components. Rub your hands against a solid metal portion of the case to discharge the static. Locate the hard drive. It should be secured in a station of bays adjacent to the motherboard--it'll also be near your DVD/CD-ROM and floppy disk drives. Remove the screws that secure the hard drive to the bay. Slowly slide the drive out of the bay. The drive will be connected to a data and power cable. You can temporarily disconnect them to take the drive out completely and give yourself more room to work with--but remember to reconnect them. Locate the jumper pins on the hard drive. There will be a diagram displaying the proper jumper settings for a given hard drive mode. Follow the diagram and set the pin cap in its slave position on the hard drive--for example, some drives may require the cap to be placed on the last two pins to set the drive as a slave. During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to IDE-1 means Pri slave escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart you will have to have master with slave set up you can find the jumper location next to the power on a hard drive and the settings for plastic jumper location is usually printed on the top of a hard drive IDE-0 means Pri master IDE-1 means Pri slave IDE-2 means Sec master IDE-3 means Sec slave single or master ::::: master with slave ::':: slave :::': black line between dots is plastic jumper note the plastic jumper is ' located at the rear of the hard drive between the EIDE and electrical lead/s clip_image001.jpg Set Up a Slave Drive b> In a computer system, a master/slave relationship establishes the primary and secondary hard disk or optical drive status. Many computer owners install operating systems on the primary or master hard disk and use the secondary or slave disk as a storage drive for games or multimedia. Master/slave or primary/secondary relationships exist only with IDE or ATA drives. SATA, a newer drive technology, is a jumperless system and does not allow for master/slave settings, which makes SATA drives easier to install. Shut down your computer. Unplug all cables and peripheral devices. Remove the left side panel while facing the front of the case. Remove screws, manipulate latches or perform other necessary steps to remove the panel. (Please see your computer or case manufacturer's documentation if you are unsure of how to remove the side panel, as this process varies.) Turn the case so that you are facing the open, previously left side of the case. Locate your drive bays. The 5.25-inch optical bays are at the top right and the 3.5-inch hard disk bays are towards the bottom right. You should be able to locate the necessary bay easily by matching your slave drive with the master drive. Clip the anti-static wrist bracelet to a metal object, and attach the bracelet to your wrist. Remove the drive from its anti-static packaging. Locate the pins on the back of the hard disk or optical drive. Jumper configurations vary according to model and manufacturer, and most manufacturers show the configurations on the drive itself. Configure the jumper according to the hard disk manufacturer's instructions. Insert the hard disk or optical drive into the appropriate bay. Secure it by screwing in at least two mounting screws. Attach an available controller cable to your drive. Most controller cables feature a Y-split cable, which makes it easy to find and attach the secondary cable that links to your primary drive. Insert the power supply cable into the port on the drive. Again, you may be able to plug in a secondary cable split from the power supply's cable to the master drive. Double-check all connections. Remove the anti-static wrist bracelet, then reattach all cables and peripheral devices. b> Configure the BIOS b> Start the computer. Enter your BIOS by immediately pressing the BIOS setup key, as shown onscreen. (Most computers feature a "Press X to enter BIOS setup" message after you hear the computer beep. Press this key. If you do not see this message, please consult your computer's documentation, as the BIOS key varies according to your motherboard.) Navigate to system setup and allow the BIOS to auto-detect the new drive. Save and exit the BIOS. Reattach the side panel if the drive is working correctly. Hope this helps.

Windows7 wont read wd1600 caviar as a external drive ???

Did you install the western digital drive softare? There should have been a disk with the drive, which you run when you have installed the drive. It tells the computer there is a new hdd in town. If you don't have the disk, google Western Digital, find their website, and search for HDD driver software, with the model number of your drive. You should be able to download the drivers to your computer, and install them that way.
