The only FREE updates are minor ones from the mapshare or speed cams etc.

full map updates are not FREE and must be bought from TOMTOM

Because the battery has gone to battery heaven. Replace it!

Step 1 Connect the TomTom One XL to your PC using the receiver's USB Cable. Step 2 Launch the TomTom Home software on your PC and log in to your account. Step 3 Click "Tools" and select "Use Latest Map Guarantee" to begin the update.

At the base of the device there is a reset button ( a small hole ) You could try to press the button .
the device will reset all its settings back to factory settings.
This way you should be able to go back to the menu and select the language you want again.

Even the new units don't come with CD'S anymore as everything is preloaded, But if you download tomtom home from the internet, then connect your unit too the computer it should automatically check for new updates, But you will not get free maps unless you first subscribe to free map updates, good luck.

Yes, you can load the map of "southern Africa" which includes South Africa. Go to the tomtom website ... click Maps ... look for "Map of the World" ... and look for Southern Africa. Then you can purchase the map ...and, download it to your TomTom ...

I am not saying this is your problem, but I have had several TomTom 125's lately that do the same thing. It seems that the ram is faulty and as far as I know there is no fix.
