Life expectancy of television
Depending on the type of TV, the longevity can be affected significantly. If your TV is a plasma model, they run very hot and the plasma only lasts about 4-5 years. That is why plasma is no longer being made by any of the major manufacturers. It was state of the art when it came out, but now LED TVs are the standard. They use much less energy, run a lot cooler and last much longer.
Longevity really depends upon the technology used, not always who made it.
Sony sometimes goes black screen on channel switch!
The main power supply regulator section circuit fault. Either it will be a separate board, or the part of main board. Check and replace damaged component/s at its main power regulator [SMPS] section circuit. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis rather than making "Surgery" to it; which usually will make loss for both money and time. Even though you can make it right, it will cost around an amount equal to the cost of a new board; including the cost of (spare parts + service charge) More to say, most of the spare parts to it will be difficult to get from open electronic spare part market. This is true to most of the flat panel TV power supply boards; irrespective of its brand and screen size.

Sony KDL-32S2010-Chicago area..channel 50.1 (WPWR)
Do a factory reset to this set, and then check. There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Sony Bravia 42 inch TV won't start red light on flashes 14 times between 2 seconds cycles. How do I fix it?
Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.

Sony KDL-52V4100 TV turns on for less than a minute then loses picture, why?
Nice TV ,but, is an LCD . most likely cause may be after long service life the 'Cold Cathode' tubes have begun to grow a carbon track down from the high voltage input . This causes the power supply for that voltage to determine too much load and shuts down . I am surprised you do not see a flashing LED pattern but this does not mean that the condition was communicated to the ECU .
That is a lot of tubes to change at about 40 usd for 10 pieces . It is also a Pain in your seat cushions to disassemble to confirm (ie: delicate connections to undo , mechanical puzzles to solve) I have seen Youtube videos of people converting to LED backlights with very nice results . It is possible but not recommended to change just the bad ones , you will soon have to do the rest anyway .
There may be a shop that does it often and could save $ compared to replacing with LED tv set that size or maybe a shop that converts(not me!)
Luck ... Hugh
4 red standby flashes!!! Need help!!!!
There are a few things to ponder here...probably the high voltage inverter power board is shutting down due to excess power drawn from CCFL(cold cathode fluorescent lamps) . This will happen eventually as a carbon track starts to grow down the tube drawing more current . There has to be a lot of hours for this to happen .
Sony was not free from the bad capacitor affliction...an ESR tester is not an expensive investment unless you only use it once but it can find bad caps that are not showing signs of ***** ie:leakage ,swelling.
failing ballast transformers would be replaced by new inverter board . This would be a last resort without schematic and instrumentation to get hard data to find culprit .
The CCFL tubes can be replaced and may be worth the time and effort with sweat equity . At approx 40.00 usd for 10 you would have to decide for a mere 32 inch LCD TV .
I would spend the money to get an LED TV and get longer service life and possibly better features ie: smart TV

Sony bravia works on ups/battery not mains :(
Sure sounds like the power supply board received an insult that allowed a different voltage to work for a while . UPS will regulate top 120 volt whereas mains may be higher or lower . You may be able to change bad capacitors or just buy the power board between 80 to 200 dollars .
If it was connected to UPS during surge it should have been protected...make sure you are connected to 'battery' side as a lot of UPS have a 'surge only' side that will not stop a rapid on/off power insult .
