Sony have used integrated circuit type output modules for lots of years and the best of this type of output has overload/overheat protection but mostly cheaper variants are used that don't tolerate overload very well.

The sound can only come out of the speakers when the amplifier provides the electrical signal that is in reality the processed power supplied by the power supply. The bigger the sound, the more power has to be supplied and processed and while most domestic hi-fi will tolerate a brief overload, because mass market manufacturers don't make things any better than they need to be, lots of heat will very quickly be generated in several parts of the circuit often leading to the sort of failure needing attention from a repair shop.

If you are lucky the cost will be less than the price of a replacement...

Popping sounds can be caused by a poor connection between the speakers, speaker cables, and amplifier. ... Wires can also become pinched in furniture or damaged in other ways, which can cause them to fray and make popping sounds. Check the cable at the amplifier and speakers and replace it if it is damaged.Jul 7, 2016

Try unplugging speaker wires from unit then power on. If it still says it u have an internal short. If it doesnt hook one speaker up at a time and see if it says it. Might be bad speaker or wiring.

Is the input volume low only from the Denon drm 700? What happens with any other device?

Make certain you are using the right connection cables first off. Then check the settings on both the TV and Sony. For example it has to send bitstream signals to get Dolby on your receiver . PC signals will not work.

Manual here: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/2895/28959611M.pdf
If you go into the settings you may find that it is set on stereo and not multi speaker.

Check your settings on the unit and also the source of the sound. Sometimes it can get switched to PCM by mistake, or can be interfered with by something like a setting for down-mixing, which should be switched off.

This is a protection warning. There is a problem with the power output. Make sure that all the speaker wires are NOT shorting-out (visual inspection). You can test the cables with a multi-tester set at the 20 ohms scale, by unplugging from the amp and testing each cable pair at the terminal. They should read anywhere between 4 and 10 ohms resistance (resistance close to 0 indicates a short)..
If the Speakers/cables are good then you have a burned power output stage or a cold solder joint at the fault sensor circuit.

This item is discontinued, but your best bet to find one is on ebay.com. There are no new ones currently listed, but several used ones. If you could find a new one, it would be a used one as soon as you turn it on, so the difference may not be meaningful, right?
