My cursor frequently jumps all over the screen
No, this is usually a faulty nipple. the easiest way to correct this is to remove the keyboard, remove the keyboard connector which is a thin ribbon cable, then slip a piece of paper in to block the thin connections for the nipple (not blocking the keyboard pins, you'll see the difference).

Vaio stuck on vaio screen
Try booting to safe mode. Restart your computer or turn it off and turn it back on. While it's starting, tap F8 until you see the options to boot to safe mode. If you see that screen, then use the arrow keys to highlight safe mode and press enter. If it goes in, then do a system restore by going to START > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.Restore it to a known good date (the date when the issue was still not there). If you cannot access safe mode, then you have a more serious problem. There are two possible reasons of that certain issue> 1. Operating System Failure which is easy to fix. 2. Hardware issue which needs the expertise of a technician. If you can't get into safe mode, then I suggest that you get the services of a technician. I hope this helps!David

Built in microphone not working
Have you been on to the Sony website to find drivers for these components? It's possible that Sony haven't got drivers for Win8 yet. Did you run the Windows upgrade preparation tool before upgrading?

Hard drive turns off
Open the power settings , adjust advanced power settings, Change to High Performance. Change Sleep and Hibernate to Never. Shut down your laptop when not in use. It will last longer and a reboot everyday resets the computer.
