Sony DDS - Recent Questions, Troubleshooting & Support
We have SONY Model SDT-5000
I could help if I had more information about the problems your experiencing? You said that the tape drive is not working, but you didn't say what was wrong with it? What is it doing? Does it turn on, but it won't record a back up? Is it a problem with your system not recoginzing the drive? Have you checked to see if your system recognizes it? Did you download and install a driver before connecting the drive to your system? What is your operating system? Win Xp? Win 7? Vista? Does the light come on when you put a tape in the drive to signal that power is going to the drive? All of these questions are very relevant. There is not link for requesting a reply of confirmation on a paid question through Fixya. If you could go to your question on Fixya and use the reply or comment link to provide the above information I will help you solve this problem.

Tar /dev/st0 can't write: error
Sounds like your tape drive or possibly the tape you are using is faulty.
check the following:
#1 - use a different tape
#2 - check that the read-only is not enabled on the tape(s)
#3 - run diagnostics on the drive (if it's come with software for diagnostics).
#4 - return it to the supplier to test and replace if under warranty.

Unlocked tapes recognized as locked
this is probably due to a stuck microswitch in the tape drive unit as the locked tag presses a microswitch when loaded it is possibly these microswitches that are failing, as one of the switches detects if a tape is loaded and the other detects is a tape is locked, so problems with these switches would mean that it cannot detect if the tape is loaded properly.

SONY CX330 camera shutting down
Why do they need to be turned on all the time? If your using them as security cameras they are not designed for that job. The 330 could be overheating because of the constant use. Some cameras have a built in 'Overheat' switch which could be switching it off.
These cameras are designed for short periods of use, recording things like parties and holiday trips. How old are these handycams? These do get old and the technology in them can wear out if in constant use.
