The dryer uses the coil in the bottom of the tub to heat up the air in the tub and speed drying time. The coil is like the same item that is used in a stove. There is a float at the bottom of the washer. See if it is stuck. It should move up and down freely. This activates the water shutoff when it reaches the proper level. If it is sticking it could allow the washer to overfill . If that is not the problem then I would look at the valve it activates itself.

Did you try turning off the circuit breaker to it, waiting about 15 minutes and turning it back on? If that doesn't do it, I would start by checking your drain pump.
