My wife wanted me to take it apart to clean it
You can replace the fuse by soldering a new one into place -- it's a standard fuse, just match the amp rating of old to new.
Chances are though, after you do this, it will blow again. So, there's a good chance the unit is kaput.
I have extensive experience with these units to the point of even replacing the high-voltage field wires (the two fine wires which run from top to bottom) with titanium wire. There is no real good way to keep these things running properly -- they're kinda like weed whackers -- inherently problematic.
Ionic breeze wire
I tried the guitar strings, they burned out quickly. The wires that came in the unit are not steel, they are not affected by a magnet. We suspect they may be tungsten or some other type of non ferrous wire. Until we find the right wire, we cannot repair them to last. Any assistance in locating the correct type of wire for use in ionizing air cleaners would be appreciated.
Ionic breeze gp keeps shutting off and clean light goes on
Oh there are a lot of known issues! I used to work for sharper image
and I believed in this items very much so until mine broke. However
after a year I figured out how to fix it. Take the big square
collection grid out and the back screen off. Now get you a thick rag
and be very careful because there are several tiny wires going up and
down. Smaller than dental floss, you need to be very careful because
you can either brake them or slice your finger wide open( Under any
circumstances I can not be held liable for the information I am giving
you try this at your own risk). Now with the towel very gently go up
and down each wire like you are polishing a brass pole(once again these
wires are thin and can break or cut you). Do this from the back side of
the unit and from the inside where the collection grid that you took
out sits. Take your time and be thorough, and presto your 400 dollar
air cleaner is working again.
Unit seems stuck in the "drying grid" mode
I had the same problem with my GP. It has worked great for four years and only recently seemed to get stuck in this drying cycle. I cleaned the grid many times, cleaned the wires, cleaned the whole unit as much as I could to no avail. The trick: You need to clean the two metal prongs and surrounding area that insert into the bottom of the grid, when you inserrt the grid. they are sharp like nails, so take care. Use an alcohol based cleaners and clean the prong and around each base. This fixed the problem for me and she's back up and running well.
I have the same problem as Theloneroofe as
These are special tungsten wire that have special ends on them to hold in place. I have some of that wire, but do not know how the ends are made to make replacements.
I doubt that you can find parts for these units.
