ALL hard drive eventually fail, I suspect yours is failing, I strongly suggest you backup all your data. Here is a free software that will tell you about your hard drives health. https://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

Get the Testdisk app and see if it can identify the issue. You can repair the boot sector or create a new one with th is app. If it shows up in the drive list you have a good chance of getting the drive back.

Claire, Have you tried connecting the drive to another computer using Windows 7 or later. You could try chkdisk /f at a command prompt or get the testdisk app to identify deeper issues with the drive. Chappo07

did you try unhide/reset attribute? in Windows you can use "attrib" command. Since you familiar with "chkdsk" command, so i assumed you have no problem how to use "attrib" command. Good luck!

It seem the folder is corrupted. I assumed you are using Mac, so you may try to repair disk using "Disk Utility". Since I don't know what version of Mac that you use, I don't know what to tell. You may try this link: Use Disk Utility to Repair Hard Drives and Disk Permissions for your reference. Or, just google how to use Disk Utility. Good luck.

Any drive will work - but you have to make sure that its physical configuration matches your pc and that you reformat the drive since the format used for dvr use is not compatible .
