Start any familiar movie on DVD/Blueray, and press pause, now go near tv and flash torch light on and off on screen. you will come to identify- 'that familiar scene' paused, of course very faint and un-lit.
If you can see faint image then cause of problem is that choke coil giving power to drinking-straw like tubelight is burnt. (Do you remember 4feet fluorescent tubelight with a very heavy metal encased five inch block sitting in the middle?) that block is choke coil. LCD TVs have similar tiny slim tube rods inside with electronic choke)

At power up, tv scrolls uncontrolably through channels, power light flickers
1. Take remote control far away from tv - 3rd or fourth room. Then switch on tv. If uncontrollable scrolling stops , then cause may be remote button (Ch+ or Ch-) has got dirt inside and its shorting.
2. If taking remote far away doesn't stop scrolling then (Ch+ or Ch-) button on front pannel has shorted. Take a cutter plier and care fully remove button from its circuit board. ( If you know desoldering, it is far better than cutting). If scrolling stops then you can operate channel change with remote.
