Try to transfer the tracks from the explorer.
1 Connect the Rio Carbon to a computer using the supplied USB cable.
2 Double-click My Computer on the Windows Desktop or in the Start Menu.
3 Locate MP3 or WMA audio files on the computer.
4 Highlight files and/or folders to transfer to the Rio Carbon.
5 Click Edit.
6 Click Copy.
7 Double-click My Computer on the Windows Desktop or in the Start Menu to open another window.
8 In the new window, locate the Rio Carbon (X:) icon that is associated with the Rio Carbon. (X equals the drive
letter assigned to the Rio Carbon.)
9 Double-click Rio Carbon (X:).
10Click Edit.
11Click Paste.
Rio Carbon upgrade problems
Sorry dude, with the hard drive clicking you are probably looking at a toasted drive or controller chip. When you get the 'upgrader' screen the device cannot get information from the drive. Your best bet is to remove the drive and try it in another device such as a digital camera or a PDA with a slot. The average life of these devices seems to be about 2 months, with a (very) few people eeking out a year or so. Most of the time the volume control breaks, or cycles, or the drive interface craps out ('upgrader' screen)
"RESTARTING"
I encountered the same issue with my Nitrus. After following instructions to upgrade firmware, I had the "restarting" message on screen. I then took the unit apart once again. I could hear the drive making a noise. I tapped on the back of the drive with a screwdriver and the player started working properly.
Memory card not working
See if there's something blocking the metal of the memory card and use something like a flat screw driver to scratch it. If doesn't work, then it simply implies that the memory card may have spoilt

Then go to Control panel -> system -> Device Manager -> and see if you have a yellow question mark or other mark there, if you do, delete the device next to the yellow mark, then at the top right click the small computer icon and chose scan for changes. Then when it finds your device chose -> portable device click ok and see if your player is in my computer now.. see the tip for modes of conectivity w/ USB devices.
