The system is simple, just a hinge with a spring to counterbalance some of the weight. please check the pilot lamp is on and lighting, if not, replace the fuse in the wire cod. also check on the internal thermal fuse it might be damaged. if all fuses are fine please measure the resistance of the heating element and verify that the switch is closing properly

please check the distance between the live and earth surface of the flat iron. the clicking sound could be originating from a possible short circuit
