You may have a pedal that is ROLAND compatible which is OPPOSITE sense from what the Yamaha requires. The Yamaha takes a NORMALLY OPEN contact.
Some Yamaha keyboards such as TYROS have a parameter that you can set to permit using either type pedal.
Some pedals have a switch to change them to use with either type keyboards.

The aluminum collars are PROBABLY safety stops to prevent the other clamps from slipping down too far if they work loose. I would expect they go on the vertical tubes aboove the X clamps.
Quiklok describes the stand as 'folds flat and
I would expect it to lock OPEN, not so in shipping mode... Isn't that a pain... our language doesn't really cover this... and advertisements make good use of the ambiguity to get us excited so we will buy....
Consider using a couple of bungee cords while transporting to solve the problem.
