I downloaded a file to my desktop from my server

The file extension for your quark file is not being recognized as belonging to any any application installed on your computer or the file extension was lost when you transferred the file (in which case, you can rename the file and put the file extension back on, e.g. change MyFile to MyFile.qxp). I'm assuming that you still have Quark installed on the computer you are trying to open the file on. If not, you should install it, which will resolve the problem. You can try repairing an existing installation: Look in your control panel for programs installed on your computer. Click on the Quark installation to see if a change or repair option is shown for it. If so, attempt a repair, which may solve the problem.

How do I convert a QuarkXpress 5 document to QuarkXpress 10?

Quark has a free document converter on their Web site which will convert a QuarkXPress 5 file into a format that can be opened directly by QuarkXPress 10. Basically any QuarkXPress documents older then version 7 can be run through this converter to make them compatible with version 10.

Windows 8 laptop

There are several ways to achieve this, below I've listed two.
  1. Purchase an external USB CD/DVD Drive.
  2. Create a disk image of the CD, transfer the image to your new machine, then use a virtual disk to mount the image and use it as you would a normal CD drive.
Obviously, the first option is going to be the easiest to do. However, it'll cost you, on average, about $40 dollars. The second option is time consuming and confusing to a novice or someone who may not have done it before. I'll go ahead and explain how to do it, in case you're looking to save money.First, we need to create the image file.
  1. Download and install MagicISO on to a machine with an optical drive. (The free version has all the features you'll need, there is no need to purchase it.)
  2. Insert your Quark XPress CD into the systems optical drive.
  3. Under the start menu, find an open MagicISO
  4. With MagicISO open, click on Tools > Make ISO from CD/DVD-ROM
  5. In the Make ISO from CD/DVD-ROM dialog, click the drop-down menu next to CD/DVD-Driver and select the device that has your CD in it.
  6. In the Make ISO from CD/DVD-ROM dialog, click the icon of a folder next to the Output File input field, browse to your Desktop and enter an appropriate file name. (eg. Quark XPress 8.1.6.uif)
  7. Click OK
Now that we've created the image file, we need to transfer it to your new computer. If the Quark XPress 8.1.6 was in-fact a CD and not a DVD, the disk image shouldn't be any larger than 700MB. Therefore, if you have USB Thumb Drive 1GB or larger, you can use it to transfer the image.Alternatively, if you connect them both to the same LAN (Local Area Network) and transfer the files over the network. To do this:
  1. On the machine with the disk image, go to click Start then type "sharing" and open the Network and Sharing Center
  2. In the left column, click on Change advanced sharing settings
  3. Now ensure that Public folder sharing is turned on.
  4. Browse to your Desktop and select the image file, press Ctrl + X to Cut the file.
  5. Next, browse to C:\Users\Public\Downloads and press Ctrl + V to Paste the image file.
  6. On your new laptop, ensure that you're connected to the network.
  7. Now, open My Computer and in the left column click on Network
  8. The other system should appear, click on it, then open Users > Public > Downloads.
  9. You should now see the image file, select it and press Ctrl + C to Copy it.
  10. Browse to the Desktop on and press Ctrl + V to paste it and wait for it to transfer. Depending on your network speeds, and wireless signal quality, it may take several minutes.
Lastly, you need to be able to install the software. Therefore, we'll create a virtual disk.
  1. Download and install MagicDisk (Freeware)
  2. After it's installed, it will automatically run. You will find an icon of a hand holding a disk in the Windows Taskbar (next to the clock).
  3. MagicDisk should automatically create one virtual disk. However, to make sure, right-click on the icon and hover over Set Number of Drives then click 1 Drive in the sub-menu.
  4. Now, right-click the icon again, hover over Virtual CD/DVD-ROM. One item should appear as a sub-menu, it should say something like E: No Media. Mouse-over the sub-menu, then in the 3rd-tier menu select Mount.
  5. A new dialog will appear, browse to your Desktop and select your image file. Click Open
  6. Your virtual drive should now auto-play the disk image. If it does not, you can launch it manually under My Computer.
As a final note, if you are not on the same network and don't have any physical medium to transfer the files, you can always upload the file to a free file sharing or data backup service such as DropBox (provided that the file is not too large). However, this will likely take a long time as it's dependent on your internet connections speed.

I can't get Quark Xpress 9 to launch

Go to: C:\ProgramData\quark and delete all sub folders and files present there. If that doesn't makes any difference in your case than you can run System File Checker (sfc). You may try uninstalling Quark, rebooting the computer and re-install it. If at all you don't get any help with that as well than you can try performing system restore.

Yes, max osx 10.4.11 and quark 6.5

Below is a standad mac fix-all and a quark fix-all but it could be something else that has happened, after looking on forums there appears to be a problem with this type of problem which quark never bothered fixing in 6.5. I would also instal the quark update from 6.5 to 6.52 from http://www.quark.com/support/downloads/Details.aspx?fid=122 before you do this it may correct it. Mac Fix-AllAnother thing I would do is go to the applications folder and then the utilities folder open up disk utility once opened click on your hard drive and then click on repair disk permissions and let it complete the verification and repair (it could take 20 minutes or more) depending upon the size of your hard drive. A lot of people do not this but to keep your machine running efficiently it should be done on a monthly basis.Quark Fix-AllIt could be that your quark preferences have corrupted, I would go to your users folder then go into the library folder, then the preferences folder and then the quark folder within the quark folder there should be a file called "XPress Preferences.prf" move this to the trash (But do not delete it yet). When you open quark next it will recreate the preference file and hopefully that will sort it out. If this has corrected the problem you can then delete the file in the trash. Please note that you will have to reset your preferences once you open Quark again. Hope this helps in some way.

When Quark 8 crashes I

Hi Chris, where did you bought the program? Unfortunately there are many double dealers out there, they might have sold the copy of the program to another person, so when you register your license the program recognize it has been used more than once. If this is not the case, I recommend you contact the Quark support. Here are the official telephone numbers http://support.quark.com/phone.html And the official support page http://support.quark.com/
Hope it helps.
