If its a clunking sound then there is more weight on one side than the other. Open the lid and redispurse the clothes. If it continues, then it could be one of the tension springs that keeps the bucket balanced located underneath.

a brand would really help me answer your question,most machine have a bolt down the centre of the agitator undo that to remove it,if the round disc type which is called a pulsator the is a plastic cap in the centre remove with a screw driver bolt is under that you may need a couple of screw drivers under it to pop it up
