Simple solution: switch two of the wires. Doing so will reverse the direction of the motor. You can switch it at the motor or on the electrical plug end.

Sniping is common, try feeding waste stock in before or after your good wood, whichever end is getting sniped. The planer will not notice the end of your wood, and cut it flat.

If it hums when its turned on look at the capacitors. Visually inspect the cooper winderings, if there is any discolored portions, ones that are blackened. It might have burned up a coil.
