You said it is not used often. If there has been a paper jam and you removed the jammed paper sometimes it helps to unplug the device to clear the error conditions. Another possible problem is a tiny peace of debris still inside the machine blocking a switch or other sensor. If there has never been a jam it still could have some bit of foreign material down in the machine. These are the most likely causes

According to Olympus the 10-year old model P-10 Digital Photo Printer only supports Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and specifically says that it will not function with Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit. You cannot remove the background noise of already recorded material unless you have special software for that purpose. It is available, but costly. Olympus has not supported that printer on the Mac in 10+ years. Also checking the Apple printer driver support page I do not see ANY Olympus printers currently supported by Apple: OS Printer and scanner software available for download I would suggest replacing that printer with a current model photo printer (also Dye-Sub) from Canon. We had a customer with the same device and same issue. It turned out it was the faulty Mini USB Data Cable. With new cable worked perfect.

Try Google for VN 5000 manual, or link your device to your computer via USB cable, and click on your device, you should be able to see your items from there. Re install the file you wish to.!!
