i have the same problem there is a resistor on the high voltage side burned cannot identify the number or resistance to replace it need diagram or parts list for machine

If it is connected to the boat motor check the voltage that is coming from the engine and clean the battery post. This solved the screen flickering.

If you don't want to do that just call Northstar customer support and see what they suggest.

It appears that the back-light, a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tube about 3mm diameter, is not working. There are two likely causes. 1. Tube has failed. 2. High Voltage supply circuit has failed. I'm currently pulling my unit apart to determine the cause. I suspect the tube is the problem but I will post more when I have it apart Does anyone know what the correct operating voltage of this Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tube is? Northstar could not provide me with a service manual. The screws are 1/16" or similar Allan Screws (about 1.6mm internal between flats). They usually can be undone with a 1/16 Allan Key but some of the screws can't be unscrewed with this key. I'm having difficulties uploading the photos at the moment but I will try and fix that.

when was last time you had your system updated

I had the same problem with my 657 I found it was moisture inside the unit that was causing the low voltage alarm to go off pull it apart and let it dry out inside

Try a factory reset - that worked for me when my Northstar Explorer 660 stopped by itself again and again. You find this reset commando by pressing MENU twice and then under Systems menu, if I remember it correctly. There is also a RAM Clear commando. This is done by holding the MENU button pressed when the GPS is switched off. Keep it pressed while switchin on the GPS, still holding the button pressed until the RAM Clear menu appears. You will probably loose all waypoints etc. by doing this so try Factory Reset as your first alternative. Good Luck! // Jonas, Sweden

I saw your post about t your Northstar Explorer 457 that you are having issues with the Language on it is that correct?

If is may ask, was the language changed or did you get your Northstart Explorer in a different Language?

On you Northstar Explorer press the MENU button twice then select SYSTEM, you should see Languageo n the List from there-on you can select the Language that you want your Northstart to be using.

If it is set to a different Language then press MENU twice once you see the list the first on top is Language to the right is the language selected from there you can press ENTER to select the Language option then the arrow keys to select which language to choose once you are set to choose the language you wish then press ENTER once again to select the option.

this should help you get your Northstar back to the Language you want.
