My Nikon Super Cool Scan

What you describe is typical of processor instability. This scanner has a powerful custom image processor inside it that is powered from an dedicated power source and it requires a good cooling.
So either the internal power source has aged and is no longer capable of delivering the necessary current or the cooling of the processor is not good enough anymore so it overheats. It has nothing to do with the way you are trying to operate, in both cases it's a hardware fault.
To find out which the scanner must be opened, its interior thoroughly cleaned and the voltage delivered by the power source measured very precisely. You will also have to investigate the status of the other components on the mainboard. All of this requires at least a basic experience with this kind of stuff. If you have never tinkered with electronics before then it's time to take it to a repair shop.

What OS does your new laptop have? In this case, the version matters. Do you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the OS? (I assume you have Windows with a Dell, then click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System to get the OS and version. A 64- bit OS will have an x64 after the version.)

Nikon does not support the 64-bit OS's.

The files below are for the USB or parallel port Nikon Scanners.

If you have Windows 98SE - XP, download the driver from http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16452 . Scroll down to the I Agree button. Then download the update to version 4.02 from here: http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16453 . Install the files in order. (Download and run; double click on the file in the Download manager or on the desktop (or folder where the program was saved).)

If you have Windows Vista, download the software from http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14463 . Again scroll to the I Agree button. You will need to accept the changes to the computer when the UAC pops up (or under).

See below for Windows 7.

Most manuals are available in a PDF format. To get the latest version of Adobe Reader, go to http://www.adobe.com . Click on the link to download Adobe Reader. (It's on the right hand side of the page below the Special sales offers. Alternatively, go to http://www.adobe.com/go/EN_US-H-GET-READER (in the US). The current version is Adobe Reader X (10.0.1). There is a download and install option. You may need to give an ActiveX permission to start the download with IE. With Vista or Windows 7, you will need to accept the installation making changes to your hard drive (possibly twice) in the UAC.

If you have Windows 7 32-bit, the Vista file may work on your computer. You need to use the compatibility mode. After downloading the file, right click on the installer. Then choose Properties and then the Compatibility tab. Turn on Run program as Compatible with the appropriate OS. Then right click again on the installer and choose Run as Administrator. Then check if the program itself is running in the compatibility mode by right clicking again and choosing Properties. However, Nikon says they do not support any version of Windows 7 even in the compatibility mode. If it doesn't work, see the 64-bit workaround below.

If you have a 64-bit OS, you need to use a workaround. This means you use a computer (virtual, dual-boot, or true second machine) with an older version of Windows installed. If you have Win7 Pro or Ultimate, you can create a virtual XP computer for free. Download and install Virtual PC and XP mode from Microsoft. Install them in order. Then install the XP software from the above site in the virtual computer and it will work. (Other virtual computer programs are Parallels and VMWare.) All of the other options will require a licensed version of the older Windows OS. Please note that the virtual computer can't share files directly with the main computer. You'll need to save files to external or removable media (optical media or flash drive, for example) to share them. Additionally your printer can only be installed on the real or the virtual computer at any given time. You will be asked to uninstall if you try to install it to the virtual computer when it is installed on the real machine.

I hope this helps.

Have Nikon coolscan 4000 ED

You need to install the drivers before the pc will recognize that there is a scanner connected to it. I would also suggest using the software that came with the scanner instead of just a program that you already have in your computer.

Here is a link to the users manual with the specs and software required to run the scanner correctly below. You can usually get a copy of just any software from CNET's website (www.cnet.com). Try locating the name of the software that the manual says came with your scanner and then go to CNET's website and find a trial version or free version and download then install it on your computer before connecting the scanner. You need to make sure that you do not connect the scanner before installing the drivers and/or software, so if you have it connected now remove the cable.

Windows 7 does not run scanners the way that Windows Xp & Vista do. Your scanner may be set up correctly now before chasing down the driver and/or software. You might want to check using the method listed below before making any changes as noted above.

With XP, the scanners software would be installed on the pc before using and you would see a picture of the scanner with the name on your desktop. To scan you just double click the ICON and follow the prompts.

With Windows 7, to use your scanner you need to click on the round globe on the bottom left of your screen (the one with the flag in it) and then go to "devices and printers" and click on that too.

Find the name of your scanner and right click with your mouse on top of it to get a drop down list of choices. In that drop down list find "scan" and click on it and you will get a drop down list of choices with scanning preferences. Choose your preferences and click scan or "ok" at the bottom. Thats how you scan something in Windows 7. Maybe you were opening the software and trying to scan something that way? After the scanner scans your image, it will number it and take you to where it stores the default scans. If you double click on the document or picture in this area, it will open it in your default software. If you have your computer set to use Vue Soft, then double clicking on the picture or document after scanning it will open it in that software.

Hope this helps?

I have a Coolscan IV

Try upgrading to v4.02 driver. You may need to download 4.0 first as 4.02 may only upgrade from 4.0. The scanner runs with v4.02 on my Mackbook pro but I can only scan using the slide adapter and the film holder at present. The film adapter will not work but i'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem.

MESSAGE TO PUT FILM IN SCANNER WHEN SLIDE IS IN SCANNER

I had exactly the same symptoms and it was solved by using the screw on the stepper motor as described in:

http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1936922.php

You have to take the two metal covers off and then the plastic front, to reveal the motor. Use a screwdriver to move the carriage back and forward by a cm or so, leaving it near the front again, but not tightly - say half a turn away from the end-stop.

Good luck

I have a Nikon Coolscann 8000 and a Mac computer.

I have successfully downloaded NikonScan 4.2 on my MacPro running Snow Leopard (10.6.6) and my Nikon LS8000ED seems to work fine. I ran a test scan and it worked with no problem.
