MESSAGE TO PUT FILM IN SCANNER WHEN SLIDE IS IN SCANNER
I had exactly the same symptoms and it was solved by using the screw on the stepper motor as described in:
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1936922.php
You have to take the two metal covers off and then the plastic front, to reveal the motor. Use a screwdriver to move the carriage back and forward by a cm or so, leaving it near the front again, but not tightly - say half a turn away from the end-stop.
Good luck

Open scanner by unscrewing the four screws in the back - this will allow ypu to slide the sides slighly backwards and then remove. Then take the plastic front of (press the plastic tap on top with screwdriver). You will the see a small brass screw center bottom at the front. Loosen this a few turn and try again (you may have to try a few times)...

The symptoms of stepper motor failure are a loud grinding noise during scanning followed by the enlightening message:
"The scanner has reported a hardware error. The present function cannot be continued. Sense: 0x04620000"
I have a Nikon LS
try to browse the CD installers sir if it has the MAC driver support. But most likely there are... however, have that adaptor needed to port your SCSI to the usb. then try to install it and route the installer to the MAC's driver in CD...
Getting true color on slide scans
Make sure you have the emulsion (image) side of the slide towards the scanner sensor. Some scanners have a special setting for film still in slide holders to correct for focus. You may need a photo edit program to help with color and density. I find no difference from 35mm to split 5x7s altho bigger is always better.

Nikon scan was unable to find any active devices
The LS2000 is older than XP and has some fairly tight requirements to work. The recommended SCSI adapter is an Adaptec 2906, and you will probably need to backrev the ASPI layer driver files to version 4.7 (available on adaptec.com site). You may need to boot in Safe Mode to remove the later versions of the ASPI files before you can install the 4.7 files. You will also need to update your Nikon Scan software to version 3.1.2, available online by googling "nikon scan 3.1.2".
Dell laptop wont recognize ls2000 scanner
The LS-2000 is a "legacy" device to XP and the Nikon software. It needs to be connected to a true SCSI bus adapter, and it's actually pretty finicky about which ones will work in XP. Sorry, you won't be able to use this with your laptop.
I need to connect a Nikon LS2000 Slide Scanner to a Power Mac G4
I originally had the same problem but with a G5. Since Nikon never updated the software for the LS2000 to work with Apple I ended up buying a FR1SX adapter from RATOC Systems: http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/FR1SX.htmlwhich connects the SCSI pins to a Firewire cable. Then I purchased the VueScan software from http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html. The scanner worked for several years with this combination.
