My router cuts off every

It is possible that the router has burned up. Router hardware usually does not last to long due to the extreme heat inside. You can repair them by buying hardware and fixing them yourself, but usually it is cheaper to buy a router. I would say a router, that lasts awhile, would cast anywhere from $40-$100.
Good luck :)

My roommate just moved in

To open the set up page of the router of the router , one of your computer should be able to go online through the router.
It could be a wired computer or wireless computer.
If it is a wireless computer then make sure that the computer is connected to your own wireless network.
Do not change any wireless settings on the router using a wireless computer.
OK ! Now you have a computer online through the router and you want to open the set up page of the router.

First step is check the IP address of the computer.
Check the IP address and the Default gateway on the computer.

For Windows XP

START ==> RUN ==> type in cmd in the RUN box==> click OK or Hit ENTER . You will see a black window that is a command prompt . In the black window type in " ipconfig " ==> and Hit ENTER on your key board .

For Windows Vista and Windows 7

click on START ==> type in cmd in the start search box ==> enter ==> you will see the black window. Type in " ipconfig "you will see a lot of information. Try to find out the local area connection IPv4 address .

Note down the Default gateway number.

For MAC OS

Click APPLE icon in the right top corner of the computer. Go to System Preferences ==> go to Network ==> you will find the option Built in Ethernet or Airport whichever is connected. If you go to that you will find the Ip address and router Address.

The default gateway is the IP address of your router.

This IP address of the router will be used to open the set up page of the router

Now you got the IP address of the router.Open the Internet Browser ( Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari )

In the Address bar of the browser Type the IP address of the router.

Do not type http:// or www just type in the IP address only.

It will ask you for the user name and the password of the router.

This is the User name and the password of the router and NOT the wireless password. On a wireless router, there are 2 passwords. One is to access the router and the other one is for the wireless network.

For most of the routers the default password will be " admin " . for some routers the default password is " password ". For Linksys router the default password is admin and no user name.

Why is my router not broadcasting wireless signal?

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Is the wireless working on wire? If it does then the transmitter of the router has reached it's break point. It does happen and it's a common problem. I used to have the same issue too and the solution was to replace the router itself.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Happy New Year!

Why wont the wireless usb card show up on my pc

Go to this link and download the driver that is for your specific model and OS. Install the software PRIOR to plugging the unit in. If the installation requires to reboot, then reboot the system prior to plugging the adapter into the USB port.

Hi i would like the wep key to my router please..

Hello

OK, firstly, your WEP code the a personal security code of the router, which secures your network.
This code is usually on the back, or bottom of the router. If you have personalised the router, you will need to log into the router and change the SSID name of the router. After you have changed the SSID of the router, you will be able to change the WEP code.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Kind regards

Forgot my password how do

Hi friend,
As you have mentioned that you have forgot the password for the router, so you can reset the router to factory settings by pressing the "RESET" button on the back of the router. It is a very samll button and you need a paper clip to press it.
What you need to do is, you need to take the paper clip, put it in a small hole on the back of the router and press and hold the button for atleast 30 seconds.
Once you release the button, the router will come back to its factory settings.
NOTE: If you will reset the router, all the settings on the router for Ethernet and the Wireless will be lost and the router needs to be reconfigured.

What is the user name

I searched the user manual, and it does not specify. Try leavng it blank or try Admin.
If it was bought used, it may have old old info in it preventing your access.
Use the recessed reset button next to the power input to restore to factory settings. Hold for about 10 seconds then power off then on.

How do i forward a

http://www.netopia.com/support/hardware/technotes/NQG_025.html
Server List (Port Forwarding) NQG_025 With NAT enabled, the IP addresses of nodes on your LAN are private since they are hidden from the Internet. IP Servers let you pass specific types of network traffic through the Netopia router's NAT interfaces. Once configured, selected types of network traffic, such as FTP requests or HTTP (Web) connections, will be forwarded to a specific host or server behind the Netopia router. Please Note: From the LAN (Local Area Network), you will also be able to access the servers that are responding to requests from the internet, but only using the internal private IP address. Access via the public IP address is not supported from a local ethernet connection. If your ISP is routing you multiple public IP addresses, you can also configure the router to forward all ports in one public IP to a designated private IP address on your LAN via Easy PAT List entries. For those instructions, see Quick Guide NQG_024: IP Mapping (Address Forwarding).
Please Note: If your router is currently running Netopia Residential Firmware with a web "GUI" configuration menu, this technote is not applicable to you. Most 3300 Series Netopia Gateways can be upgraded to Enterprise level firmware. Click Here! to purchase the upgrade key.

Before You Start
Telnet into the Netopia router's Main Menu at 192.168.1.1 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly. Click Here! for instructions on using telnet and Hyperterminal (serial connection).
Login with the user name and password. The Superuser login is required to save changes. If you are unsure of this, contact your network administrator.
Don't forget to press the Enter key to save any entries. Hitting the back space, delete or tab without first hitting enter will undo any changes.
The Esc key will take you back towards the main menu screen.
Once you have completed your configuration, you should reboot the Netopia to save and apply your changes.

The Netopia Main Menu Interface

Server List Configuration

  1. From the Main Menu of router console screens, go to Quick Menus, and select Network Address Translation.
  2. Select Show/Change Server List.
  3. Select Easy-Servers.
  4. From the Show/Change NAT Server List screen, select Add Server.
  5. Select Service and the service and port you want to allow. If your service and port are not available in the pull-down menu, select Other. Selecting Other will allow you to enter a specific service port or a range of ports since fields are provided for both a First Port Number and a Last Port Number. To allow a specific service port, the First Port Number and Last Port Number should be the same. Select Okay.
  6. Next, enter the Server Private IP Address, or the private IP address of the host/server you are forwarding the service to, and the Public IP Address you want to associate with the same host/server. This value can be left set to 0.0.0.0 if you are using the WAN IP as the Public IP address. Note: If your ISP is routing you multiple static IP addresses, other then the one used for Internet access, you may create more than one server for specific service as long as all servers have a different Public IP Address specified. For example, with two web servers on your LAN you would need to create two Server List entries for TCP 80 (www-http). Since each specific port (service) can only be mapped once using any given Public IP Address, a distinct public address must be used for each TCP 80 server list entry. It is not necessary for you to specify more than one Local WAN IP Address or Public IP Address in your router's configuration. As long as you are connecting to your ISP via a public IP address used for NAT, they are responsible for routing all other IP addresses via that connection.

Conclusion
You have now configured your router for TCP/UDP port forwarding. If you have a switched connection (ISDN or Analog), you will need to either disconnect and reconnect your Internet connection, or restart your router for the Nat Server List changes to take effect. If you wish to filter traffic for your static IP mappings, please see the following Netopia Technote:
NQG_039: NAT and the Basic Firewall
