It is actually IMPORTANT to have the HANDSET HOOK set appropriately (read the manual... (see below)). Check the BATTERY CONTACTS and make sure they are clean & shiny... If NOT... Use a soft graphite pencil to gently burnish the battery contacts. If they are heavily corroded ... comment me back & I will detail instructions on how to restore (or replace) functionality... if it has a tape in it . may be full flip tape, is the cord from the phone plugged in securely, leave it unplugged for 10 minutes, may need longer to reset.

Sounds like either you have do-not-disturb activated, or you have call-forward-all to voice mail set. You should have call-forward-no-answer turned on but it's easy to enter wrong code. Find a list of codes for your system and see if its one of those.

You apparently have unheard messages on the voicemail system provided by your telephone company. This system records messages when someone calls while you're already on the phone. Please contact your telephone company for instructions on accessing their voicemail system.
