Works only like dvd player, does not burn
Hello and Welcome to Fixya.
Seems like you're having a software issue that prevents your system to read/run a disc when inside the operating system. I have included the official fix from Microsoft:
DVD Drive TroubleshootingAll you have to do is to click on "Run Now" and follow the on screen prompts - just remember to eject any CD that you may have inside the drive.
Please note that if this does not work, then the drive needs to be replaced. You may contact LG for replacement options in case that happens.
Hope this helps and Thanks for using FixYa.

Reboot the PC.
Upon reboot, Windows should find the new device and install generic drivers. It will probably ask you to reboot a second time.

My Lg dvd writer HL-DT-ST
Hi,
There has always been a problem with LG Drives,I experienced it too.Anyways try one of the following:
- Get a Lens Cleaner which is easily available in the market and run it on the drive.
- Check your drive with a different DVD-R and see if it works,if it does work, the problem is that the disk is unreadable, try washing the disk with toothpaste(i aint kidding this works)
- Clean tray with a soft cloth
- Last option, try the service centre
Thank You.

1. When an optical drive doesn't read or recognize CD/DVD the unit is in need of replacement. Units can be straight out of the box and fail.
check the connection to the device ( cable) and the power to the unit
