How to repair a pre- 1960 thumb press front doorlock?
Most locksmiths can repair these and some universal parts are available. It may end up costing more than a new lock though. Some problems are easy to fix. I'd need to know the specifics, brand, model and what the problem is.
I have difficulty locking the deadbolt with the key
If the lock works easily with the door open, the strike plate is not lined up correctly. If it is hard to turn with the door open, loosen all the mounting screws and be sure the inside and outside parts are lined up correctly. Also the latch is marked for correct installation. If upside down, it won't work correctly. All three parts need to line up so check for smooth operation before tightening the screws.
Remove collar from latch kwik set door knob
There are two small bumps on the latch body, which snap into two holes on the collar. Use a small screwdriver to get the collar over the bump on top or bottom, then repeat for the opposite side.
Exterior door stuck closed manually retract ****** remove knobs KWIKSET
You will probably need to replace the latch assembly. There is a small rivet that holds part of the latch together, and it also acts as a pivot point for a small piece that retracts the latch. If it gets bent, the latch won't retract fully, but you might be able to push it back and get the door open.
How to tighten kwikset #991LL
Remove inside lever by loosening the setscrew and pulling. Carefully pry off the inside cover. Make sure both screws are tight. Replace inside lever. With door unlocked, the outside lever can be removed in the same way as the inside. All that is necessary though is to be sure the setscrew on the outer lever is tight. Check to be sure the lock is tight and operating correctly before closing the door and locking it.
The deadbolt inside turnbutton is held on with a small setscrew. Remove it and the inside cover. Be sure the screws under the cover are tight. Check the lock operation, replace cover and turnbutton.
Have cylinder body stuck in cradle can not remove it
If you rotate it back as much as possible toward the start position (the slot with the dot), then insert the tip of a kwikset key and give it a small twist clockwise or counter, it should be able to rotate back to start and you can remove the cylinder. I rekeyed 3 in a row no problem and had the last one jam up. I successfully restarted 3 times, but couldn't get it to complete the rekey.
